Department Profile


Department Description

Occupational Health is the promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of physical, mental and social well-being of workers in all occupations by preventing departures from health, controlling risks and the adaptation of work to people and people to their jobs. The aim of the Occupational Health Department is to achieve excellence and quality in the efficient delivery of a comprehensive occupational health service, by protecting, maintaining and promoting the health of all employees, while encompassing this with regulatory and policy compliance.

The Range of Occupational Health Services Include:

  • Risk based Pre Placement Health Assessment
  • Vaccination and screening programmes e.g. Hepatitis B, MMR etc.
  • Risk based screening, e.g. Exposure Prone Procedure Clearance
  • Management of occupational biological exposures (per PPPG)
  • Verification of Doctors Integrated Management Electronic System (DIME)
  • Advice for HCWs on health related matters to reduce occupational ill health
  • Provide confidential information, guidance and support for all HCWs
  • Sickness absence management and support - medical assessments
  • Occupational health case management 
  • Fitness for work assessments- Return to work rehabilitation programmes and accommodations
  • Health surveillance, hazardous substances, visual display unit eye test etc.
  • Medical Criteria for HSE schemes e.g. Critical Illness Protocol, Temporary Rehabilitation Remuneration assessments
  • Ill health retirement assessments
  • Biological monitoring when necessary
  • Support for employees and managers in work related issues e.g. stress, conflict management etc.
  • Provide training on biological and psychosocial hazards in the workplace
  • Maintenance of confidential medical and vaccination records
  • Support organisational health and wellbeing initiatives
  • Participate in audit and review
  • Respond to local and national emergencies
